Writing a Mission Statement by Diana Flegal

How many of you have a written mission statement related to your writing?

Writing out a mission statement is something I encourage my clients to do.

A book I found helpful in this is The Path, by Laurie Beth Jones. (Best known for her book Jesus, CEO).

Laurie Beth said: “Not to have your own vision is to live somebody else’s.”

A few questions a mission statement answers are:

  • Why are you writing?
  • What three things would you like to convey through your writing?
  • What do you hope your readers are going to take away after reading what you write?
  • What do people say you are good at?
  • How can I use what excites me to make a change in the world?

I recently refined my mission statement, and it took some work to whittle it down to this:

To demonstrate God’s love to others by granting them permission to be who God designed them to be, summoning up and returning them to their childhood dreams. To restore Kingdom value to damaged adults and wounded believers.

Jot down the words that came to mind when you read my mission statement, and return to this exercise later if you don’t have the time right now. Don’t forget to enlist the help of someone who knows you well.

Having a mission statement will give definition to your writing journey.
