Unexpected Fiction Prompts by Andy Scheer

“Adventure Awaits.” That email subject line—from an online auction site—caught my attention. So I clicked to see what adventurous items might be on sale.

They weren’t the athletic or travel gear I expected. But maybe I lack imagination.

If you’re seeking a fiction-writing prompt for your next adventure novel, maybe you could envision how these “adventure awaits” items might serve as an inciting incident.

Maybe these “adventure awaits” items could serve as an inciting incident.

Adventure Item 1: “Up to 40% Off Summer Pool and Patio Furniture. Perhaps our hero’s sidekick could be klutzy at assembling a lawn chair and end up in the emergency room.

Adventure Item 2: “Up to 40% Off Skin Care Essentials: Moisturizers, serums, and more.” There’s nothing worse, I suppose, than an Indiana Jones or Lara Croft equivalent with rough, dry skin.

Adventure Item 3: “Up to 30% Off Tubes, Life Jackets, and More.” At last, equipment for a seaside adventure. It’s worked for decades for Clive Cussler and his fictional Dirk Pitt, so why not also save thirty percent?

Adventure Item 4: “PWCC Premier Graded Cards Auction #5: Check out new cards frequently. No reserve.” Now there’s an untapped topic for the next breakout adventure novel: the untamed jungle of collecting baseball cards! Say, what if the collectors were Amish …

  1. Andy, your suggestions made me chuckle, and now I want to read the stories your comments inspire. 🙂 Yes, ideas are everywhere.

  2. Andy Scheer says:

Maybe in a few months, you’ll see a book proposal for one of those “adventure” stories. Better you than me.
