Are You Caring for Yourself? by Linda S. Glaz

Okay, writers, you’re worse than doctors. You take EVERY spare moment of your day, and you write. Kids taking a nap? Writing. Husband eating out for business? Writing. Kids at school and you’ve already: vacuumed, done the laundry, straightened the house, mowed the lawn, fixed the drippy faucet, and put supper in the oven. Now you are writing.

I know because I’ve been there. Every spare second I could squeeze in the writing, I did. I even stayed up until three or four in the morning most nights so that I didn’t have to stop writing.

Here’s the thing. We are worse than doctors. Honestly, other than our coffee or Diet Dr. Pepper for the caffeine we need to stay awake these insane hours, we don’t do a great deal to keep ourselves healthy. We are all about everyone else first.

I’ve talked with so many writers who keep these crazy hours day after day. Then I read on FB about how sick they are on a fairly regular basis. I know, I know, we can’t blame every ache and sneeze on poor sleeping habits, but like everyone else, we NEED to get some sleep.

Not sure why I felt compelled to write this, but I know someone out there needs to hear it.

The story will wait. It will still be there in the morning or at your next break.

Take care of yourself first, then the mind will function even better as you sit down to write the next great American novel.
