Facebook Friends by Linda S. Glaz

“Oh, I have 4997 friends now, isn’t that awesome?”

Are they really friends? Writer friends? Acquaintances? Bosom buddies?

Just how are you friends with the person and why does that matter?

Are you adding numbers just to add numbers, or have you come to know the individuals from conferences, etc? Maybe through other writer friends.

Think about what you want to share on your FB if you leave it open to anyone. IF you are using it primarily for networking, then don’t engage in nasty rhetoric concerning politics, and petty arguments about other authors. Don’t take this great opportunity and use it to burn bridges.

IF it’s a personal site that you allow fellow authors to share, remind them periodically that your site is a personal one and that you plan to treat it that way.

You have to make the decision of what you want to display on your site, as well. How much personal information, photos, etc. that you intend to “share with the world”.

Be wise. Be cautious, but have fun.
