Romance Writing 102 by Diana Flegal (Archived blog)

One day I had my girlfriends over and my son was visiting. The discussion turned to talk about guys; their shortage and unavailability. The recent breakup of a friend’s relationship had a few of them soured on men.

My son had retired to the living room with my laptop and we were doing our best to cheer our friend up when he piped up and said, “You know what you all need? You need to find yourself a nerd. Nerds get great jobs, make good money, and tend to be very loyal.”

We stopped talking, stared at him, and frankly, were speechless.  There was a crazy logic to his argument.

As a romance writer, have you considered casting a nerd as your hero?

You might want to.

  1. Jon Guenther says:

I’m a total nerd (web developer, like Star Wars, read comic books, play video games). And I approve this message! 🙂

  2. Diane, Great article. You have a wise son. What is the definition of a nerd? I think it’s changed. There are some very intelligent men who love nerdy things that I would not consider a nerd. Are nerds introverts? This makes for a great discussion. Thank you, Diane.

  3. I took science and math classes in high school and college. Some of my best friends were nerds. Big Bang Theory is a huge success and it’s full of nerds. So, why not make our heroes nerds? Your son is very wise. Thanks for sharing. You made me smile.
